PATENT:REVERSE CYCLE MACHINE PROVIDED WITH A TURBINE

Tesla turboexpander, characterized by flexibility and high efficiency, can be applied in every kind of fludynamic circuit given that it can be used with a wide types of fluids (air, water, oil, biphasic fluids,..). Our idea is to apply this expander where a pressure drop is available but not exploitable with common technologies: the most suitable example is heat pumps.

A heat pump is a device that takes heat from one source and moves it to another location through electric or mechanical means. Heat pumps may be used either to heat or cool. It is known that this reverse thermodynamic cycle has a huge number of applications, both domestic and industrial.

Our heat pump machine comprises:

  • an evaporator (9),

  • a compressor (1)

  • and a condenser (3)

arranged in series along a path of a working fluid.

  • The machine then is equipped with a boundary layer turbine (7)

placed between the condenser (3) and the evaporator (9).

MACHINE SCHEME

The Tesla turbine (7) comprises:

  • a set of power disks (30) mounted on a shaft (33) which rotates inside a volume of a rotor casing (53),

  • an inlet opening (70) for introducing a working fluid in a stator volume (51),

  • a stator nozzle (52), which accelerates the flow in a direction that is tangential to the power disks (30),

  • a discharge (73) of a working fluid,

  • the rotor casing (53) has a drain (7 1, 72) of the fluid liquid fraction  in order to avoid its concentration in the peripheral part of the volume where the power disks are located.
